Discord WIRED Magazine Video

The Objective

This is my Discord WIRED Magazine video for the magazine cover I created. The goal was to create a video about the process behind making the Discord magazine cover. The video was edited using Screenflow.

Discord – Not Just For Gamers

I decided to go with Discord for my magazine cover. Discord is a voice chat app where users can talk, text, or have video conversation in a chat channel. Discord is mainly marketed to gamers, so I created a concept where Discord would start to market itself as an app that can be used for business use.

I placed the Discord mascot, Wumpus on an Olympic podium with two of Discord’s main competitors, Skype and Slack. The concept represents Discord being placed in higher regard than other #VoIP apps.

Screencasting

I started by screencasting all of my online footage. This included the web research, the Illustrator section, and the Cinema 4D section.

I made sure I got all of the footage I needed and even recorded a little extra just in case. It’s always good to record more than what you need rather than less.

External Footage

I recorded my external footage with my Canon EOS Rebel T5i. One thing I tried differently was recording myself on camera talking about my process. I was feeling adventurous and wanted to add a bit of personality to my video.

I also added some B-roll footage of myself sketching, and working on the magazine cover on my computer.

Controlling the Audio

The audio that the camera recorded was really loud, so I went to the audio settings and brought the volume down. Audio is definitely hard to nail if you’re a beginner at video editing, which is why it’s such a valuable design asset if you get it right.

I also added a stock music track from bensound.com. It has a large selection of royalty free music that you can use for your videos.

Call to Action

At the end of the video, I created a call to action section where I promoted my website and social media. I want to get my audience engaged and convince them to browse my other work.
