Download and Register for Chewsi Animation

This is an animation I helped create for Chewsi Dental. Chewsi networks with dentists from around the country and gives patients access to savings on dental care. Recently I was asked to help the communications team create an animation showing patients how to download and register for the Chewsi app. I animated the video using After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Chewsi Animation Storyboard

As always it’s good to start with a storyboard. We created the storyboard in Illustrator to outline how each frame would look in the final video. Once we were given the green light to continue, we jumped in to animating.

Creating the Animation

The main animation was created in After Effects. It was important to keep in mind the brand guidelines of Chewsi when creating the animation. This includes using the right color values, using patterns and graphics correctly, and using the overall tone of the brand.

Once the animation side was done, I moved the animation, voice over audio, and background music into Premiere Pro. I adjusted the audio gains so that the music didn’t overpower the voice over.

After a few revisions, we eventually hit on the final product.

4 Critical Video Marketing Stats for 2020 – Animated Infographic

No other kind of digital content has a greater emotional impact on people than video content. To prove so, I created an infographic showing key video marketing stats for 2020.

With businesses opening back up again, you’ll have to reach a huge number of people. Fortunately, the increasing value of videos, and the decreasing cost of making them, will help you spark more brand awareness and generate more sales. Here’s a look at 4 critical video marketing stats to know for your 2020 marketing strategy.

Video Marketing Generates Profit

88% of video marketers are satisfied with the ROI of their video marketing efforts on social media (Animoto, 2018). Brands use video marketing to increase sales, build brand awareness, keep their current customers informed, and reach out to new customers. One reason why video marketing is such a powerful tool is because it allows people to digest information visually, which is easier for them.

U.S. Internet Users LOVE Video Content

More and more video content is being watched now than ever before. 85% of all internet users in the United States watched online video content monthly on any device. It’s also important to note that the time spent by U.S. users watching video content weekly on a smartphone is growing over time as well. Again, people love being able to see visually how your brand is going to be useful to them.

The Demand for Brand Videos is Increasing

Studies show that 54% of consumers want more video content from brands they support. With the increasing demand for video, many industry giants are producing different types of video content in order to meet the rising need for videos. Video is in a higher demand because people are paying more attention to videos rather than plain text.

Video Marketing Influences Purchasing Decisions

A survey conducted by Wyzowl shows that eight out of ten users have purchased a product after watching a brand’s video. Additionally, Google LOVES video content. According to Google, video influences internet users by acting as a “shopping list,” reminding them of things they need to buy. Video marketing equips users with more information to carry out purchases. Some examples include demo videos or product reviews.

The Final Takeaway on Video Marketing in 2020

Overall, video marketing in 2020 is a great tool to communicate information to your audience. Not only is it useful, but now you can actually afford to produce great video content. With the help of freelance animators and video content creators (like myself), creating professional video content in 2020 is within your brand’s reach, and overtime, you’ll see a dramatic increase in sales and brand awareness.

Why Animated Gifs are a Powerful Marketing Tool

I wrote another blog post similar to this one about the value of motion graphics as a whole. Click here to read it.

It’s no question that visual storytelling is the golden ticket to an authentic connection with your audience. The real question arises when it’s time for you to think of a unique and creative way to tell YOUR story.

You as a business owner can no longer afford to be a faceless entity in a sea of competition. In order to survive, you need to take your storytelling game to the next level.

The solution to this problem might come as a surprise. Dell, the popular computer company, implemented this strategy into their email marketing campaign, and, as a result, saw a 42 percent jump in its click rate, a 103 percent increase in its conversion rate, and a 109 percent increase in revenue. So what’s this powerful solution?

Animated Gifs.

I know most people associate gifs with popular internet jokes, but the truth is they’re no joke when it comes to engaging with your audience. But why? What makes them so effective? And how can you use them to your advantage?

What is a GiF?

A Graphics Interchange Format, or GIF, is basically a “moving image.” It’s a jpeg or png sequence that plays with no audio. One key feature of gifs are their small file size, which make them easy to share with your friends or on the internet. In fact, people shared gifs more than 150 million times in 2015. In other words, gifs are very popular.

But why should you care about gifs as a business owner? What good can these gifs do for you? Well as I mentioned earlier, gifs helped Dell increase their revenue and click rate quite substantially. Let’s look a little deeper as to what makes them a powerful marketing tool.

Gifs have Emotional Impact on People

The ability for an animated gif to connect with people emotionally is marketing gold. A good emotional message can bring people inspiration, laughter and harmony. If you can get that effect out of your viewer through gifs, you’ll see a dramatic increase in authentic relationships.

Gifs can Add Personality to Other Projects

You can use gifs in a wide variety of ways in projects that your business may be working on. Whether it’s showing off a new product, or generating content for your audience to share with their friends, implementing gifs into your other projects can

Gifs are Easy to Consume

What’s ironic about animation is that even though it’s proven to generate more engagement than still images, It can be tough to capture someone’s attention for more than a minute. Animated gifs provide the perfect middle ground for this problem. As mentioned earlier, gifs are basically moving images. People can digest the content of a gif quickly while still getting the most value.

Conclusion

In closing, there’s more value to animated gifs than people may think. They’re not just used for silly internet humor. They’re also a fantastic method of communicating information. As long as you don’t overuse them and know how you can use them effectively, you’ll have a new tool at your disposal for revitalizing your brand and destroying the competition.

Why Your Brand NEEDS to Switch to Motion Graphics

One of the leading trends that’s proven to be very effective is Motion Graphics. Animated elements in design have become an essential part of creating captivating designs. They provide  inventive and fresh results for any creative need. So much has already been said on this need for animation, but here’s a look at the why. Why do viewers connect with motion graphics? What about motion graphics causes more engagement than other forms of media?

Motion Graphics Create an Emotional Connection with the Viewer

Motion graphics take the concept of visual storytelling and take it to the next level. Animation adds more life to a story, and when combined with music to emotionally hook viewers and a voiceover to add that human connection. All of the assets work together to keep the audience hooked. When done right, motion graphics can delight, inspire, and guide your audience to take whatever action your brand most needs.

Animations Give a Great First Impression

The first impression can be the be all end all when meeting prospective clients. It takes only a few seconds for people to decide whether they like something or not. Motion Graphics can add to the personality of a brand and give consumers a great first impression. A logo, for example, is the first element of a brand that potential clients will see. An original animated logo is a fantastic way to surprise people and increase the chances that they will remember your brand.

The Main Takeaway on Motion Graphics

In the end, motion graphics are the new way to creatively and effectively tell a brand’s story. Original and effective animations personalize the relationship between the brand and their audience. Whether the end goal is to sell a product or promote an idea, motion graphics will convert prospective clients into lasting relationships.

Instagram Marketing Animated Infographic

It’s been about a year since my online portfolio has come to life, and it’s been about a year since I’ve shared my portfolio on various social media platforms. Recently, I thought about how I can optimize my posts to get the most engagement from my audience. Instagram, in particular, was my main focus. I did some research and created an animated infographic about using Instagram as a marketing tool.

I also created a still infographic about Instagram marketing that you can check out here.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard for the infographic. Most of what is in this storyboard is in the final product. Creating the storyboard is so helpful compared to just jumping into After Effects and creating an animation from scratch.

Aesthetic Analysis

A common cliché with infographics is that most of them are done in flat style. It’s visually appealing in any interface and media, but it’s overdone. I wanted to create an animation similar to flat design, but I wanted to add some 3D elements that elevated the project (the Instagram World icon for example).

A little detail I like so much about this animation is the subtle shadows that are seen on the background and the elements of the animation. It gives the piece so much depth and life to it.

Let’s Bring it to Life

Time to put the idea in motion. I used a lot of different compositions for the different sections of the animation. It’s a good way to break the animation down into smaller chunks, rather than put all the assets into one comp.

Final Thoughts

I’m really proud of how the animated infographic turned out. We usually see infographics as still images. However, creating an animated infographic will be more engaging for the viewer. They will be inclined to pay longer attention to the content.

Sonic X Kinetic Typography Animation

In honor of the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie coming out next year, I created a kinetic typography piece using a quote from my favorite Sonic show growing up, Sonic X. I created the animation in Adobe After Effects with the Sure Target plugin.

Creating the Typography Layout

Type layout for animation

Before I started animating, I created a typography layout in Illustrator to give myself a rough idea of how I wanted to animate the text. I used two colors for the text, blue and red for Sonic and Knuckles respectively. When choosing fonts, I used a bold font for Knuckles, who was angry and uptight, and a thin font for Sonic, who was more casual and laid back.

Color swatches and font choices

Matching the font style to the character will give the viewer an impression of how that character acts. Ultimately, it will give the kinetic typography more personality.

Creating the Animation

After creating the type layout, I took to After Effects to start animating. As stated, I made the animation using a plugin called Sure Target. Sure Target controls the After Effects camera and adds features like Camera Rolls and Auto Focus. This is what creates the extreme motion effect found in most kinetic typography animations. It’s almost like the camera is “flying” between different text parts.

Animation After Effects composition

Below is a closeup of the SureTarget plugin. In the effect controls, you can set the number of targets that the camera will jump to. You can also manipulate the camera motion, adjust the camera dolley, and change the camera focus.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I am very pleased with how the piece turned out. For starters, this was my first time working with kinetic typography, and I believe it’s really fun to work with. Also, I really enjoyed using the SureTarget plugin. It’s a great plugin, for instance, if you want to create really engaging kinetic type pieces like this one. Personally, I believe kinetic typography adds fresh energy to any brand’s storytelling.

Haunted: Animated Diorama

This is a fifteen second animated diorama I created in Adobe After Effects. The illustrations used in the diorama were completed using Adobe Illustrator.

Diorama Illustrations

I wanted the style of the animated diorama to be hand-drawn, hence why the symmetry of some of the drawings aren’t perfect. I wanted to have black strokes around the drawings to give the diorama more of a cartoon vibe rather than the cliché minimal style. I think this style also fits the haunted, spooky theme of the animation.

Animating the Diorama in After Effects

Now for the fun part: taking our still pictures and making them move! I hopped over to After Effects and created several comps; each for a different element in the animated diorama (eyes, ghost, etc.). I nested the comps into my “main comp,” and put the comps in to 3D space in order to set up lights and camera movement.

This was the main comp where the final animation would be taking place. Look at all those layers!

For the flickering candle lights, I used the puppet tool to simulate the movement of a candle and used a point light with varying intensity.

Overall, this was a fun project to work on. The diorama art style is very unique, and not a lot of animators use this style in more recent media. I think it’s good to experiment with different styles because you have more options when drawing inspiration and brainstorming ideas.
